Every time I hear someone say something about Marmol being "lights out", I want to punch them in the face. There is nothing lights out about the guy. The only sure thing about Marmol is that he is going to walk someone. Sure, his slider is very tough to hit, but I don't think he's reliable enough to be a closer. He walked 5 guys in the 9th. How in the world can you say that this guy is good enough to be our closer? I haven't liked Marmol ever and I hope to see him go sooner than later. He's about as reliable as Mitch Williams. I think the hosts of Cubscast should go back to calling him Homemade Jam because that's all he can be relied upon to do.

Well it could have something to do with the 2.91 ERA or the 1.91 strikeouts per inning. The ERA is fairly average for closers and the strikeouts blow other relievers away - Marmol has 82, the next closest closer has 58. He does walk more than others, but he gives up less hits. Marmol's WHIP is in line with some of the top closers in the league. Everyone blows saves every once in awhile. He is prone to walking guys, but usually he gets out of it and has been an effective closer. It is frustrating when he throws a game away like yesterday though. _________________ “Chicago Cubs fans are ninety percent scar tissue.” |
