Our bullpen can't get much worse at this point. Howry was pretty good for the first half of his stint with the Cubs and I am optimistic.

I guess thats why I am a cubs fan though heh.

At the very least I'm willing to wait and see. There is not much available right now and taking a shot with Howry makes sense. Can't be much worse than what we have (looking at you Grabow), and could potentially be better.

I think the best thing that Howry will bring is EXPERIENCE. This bullpen needs that.

I agree. He knows how to suck with the best of them. Need to teach the others how to suck with pride.

That's really not fair. Howry has had a very nice career despite a couple bad seasons recently. He's a vet that should have a positive impact on the young guys.

Sure it is. Regardless of what they've done in the past, it's no longer about that. It's about this year. I want to see the Cubs win. They need to improve to do that. I'm not sure what experience Howry really brings to a struggling staff because he can't even figure out how to fix his own struggles.

Whether or not he can effectively pitch is about what he can do this year. The experience he can bring to the bullpen is not. He can still be a great mentor for the young guys in the bullpen even if he isn't nearly as effective as he once was.

Ok kid, here's what you do. He's looking for a fastball on the first pitch so you throw one but...away. That'll trick em'. After that you take a long look into your mitt and think about where you want to throw your next pitch. It usually takes me 30 seconds to decide on another fast ball away. Now, get out there and try it!

You know what? You guys are right, a guy who has pitched in the major leagues can provide zero value to an inexperienced player.

I'm not concerned about the bullpen right now. When was the last time they blew a lead for us? Granted, we haven't given them many chances, but I'm more worried about the hitting. As for Howry, I'm not a huge fan, but its worth a league-minimum contract. I just want Lou to make him earn his spot in the bullpen or face mop-up duty. We'll see, but right now I want some offense. granted that does not mean we go and try to get Ronny Cedeno back Smile

Did anyone expect anything different today?

Yes, I actually did. I hate to admit it, but I was in an optimistic mood yesterday. As well as the bullpen was pitching (until the 12th), I really thought the Cubs would push one of those runs across and win.

Sadly, I realize now that I should have been pessimistic instead. They should have been 6-1 since the AS break instead of 4-3.

Even though our Cubs lost the game I still found the game exciting and encouraging. Seeing Castro and Theriot tagging up at 2nd on flies to CF was great. Yes, Howry sucks. However, the game should have been over long before it came down to him. When I saw Fukudome cork screw himself into strike three instead of hitting a fly ball I knew the Cubs were in trouble. Fukudome's strike out may mean that Lilly will be gone before his next start. It will be sad to see a team that was over .500 for three straight years be torn apart. Sad
