So if Ryno gets selected to manage the Cubs, since his number is retired, will he still be able to wear his old number when he manages? Are there other managers who have had their number retired and returned to their old team to manage and wore their old number?
If he does come back, I sure hope he doesn't pull an Alan Trammel. A beloved player for Detroit with a black mark for managing Detroit.

| I would assume he would get to wear 23. Under the pretense that it was said he would be the last person to wear that number. |

| I would also guess that he could wear it. The real question is should he be the manager. I would love it, but I wonder if my vision is blurred because of the fact that he was one of my favorite players growing up. I look at what else is out there......Torre and Girardi.........might they be better.............. I would usually look at those two as long shots, but with Girardi still owning in Chicago and Torre dealing with the whole McCourts divorce issue....they might be possible. |

Torre would be number 3 on my list. I'd like to see a manager join the team that planned to be around for awhile, and I think Torre will be looking to fill the last few years of his career before retiring.
Girardi would be great, wouldn't be upset if Ryno was the manager either. Did read recently that he has managed more games at this point then Girardi did before he got his first big league job. |

I actually wouldn't mind see Torre come in to mentor Ryno as he gets his feet wet in a coaching role with the big club. Then when Torre peaces out after a couple years, Ryne can take over for the long term. _________________ “Chicago Cubs fans are ninety percent scar tissue.” |

I don't see that as a combination that would please either guy. Is Torre wanting a short term gig with the legend looking over his shoulder; does Ryno want to sit around for several more years? Then there is the problem that if the combo is successful there'll be a clamor for Torre to stay while if they fail Ryno's taking over under tough circumstances with very limited goodwill from the fans.
I still see Ryno as the top candidate, which of the big names bandied about really want to come to a team rebuilding, but with a huge payroll? _________________ Wha's like us? Damn few and they're a' deid! |

Torre did it (somewhat) with Don Mattingly in New York - even though he ended up following Torre to LA. I doubt it would bother him, the guy is 70 years old and has to be looking at his last job soon. I know Ryne probably won't like it, but could be willing to accept it as long as he is the manager in waiting.
Who knows? anything is speculation at this point. _________________ “Chicago Cubs fans are ninety percent scar tissue.” |

| At first I thought that Girardi would be the best candidate. However, the info on other Cubs web sites has swayed me. Ryno has done all that was asked of him. He has the ICubs in first place. Whenever I do everything that expected of me at work I would then want to opportunity to move to the next level. Ryno has done that. He has earned the chance to manage the Cubs. If Girardi were available and the Cubs hired him it wouldn't be a bad decision but it would be a slap in the face to Ryno. I would hate to see Ryno manage a different team to a title. That may be enough to drive me over the edge. |

My only problem with choosing Ryno is that he has zero experience coaching in the major leagues. Maybe that isn't as important when you've played. It would be nice for him to have some kind of experience or mentor who has been there and can teach him a few things. Managing in the majors offers some unique challenges that the minor league clubs do not. _________________ “Chicago Cubs fans are ninety percent scar tissue.” |
